Ghosts or Spoofs

 

Maine is the perfect place for ghost stories, sitting around a campfire, coyotes howling in the background, absolute darkness, and deafening quiet.  Perhaps that is why we have more than 40 different ghost sightings across the State.

Places which are listed in Red text will be a subject of further research.  I  have learned a tremendous amount gathering this information,  and I found it truelly fascinating that Maine had so much drama, and most unsettling too....maybe that's why we have so many spirits.

 

Acton

 

Loon Pond - A ghost dog is said to roam the shore here. He is said to be a Siberian Husky type with three legs, and he has a phosphorescent glow, and can be seen around midnight or 1 a.m.

 

Belfast 

 

Pine Wood Cemetary - orbs showing up in pictures, something banging on the side of witnesses cars and footsteps in the grass.

 

Biddeford

 

Biddeford City Theatre - At this historic theater building, strange things are said to happen. There is a face above the stage, and the eyes on it seem to open, close, and look around. There are also unexplained voices and noises, and lights that flash and flicker.

 

Boothbay 

 

The Opera House at Boothbay Harbor - It is said that at the Boothbay Opera House, the ghost of an unknown soul haunts a room on the second floor.

 

Outer Heron Island - A headless sea captain's ghost is rumored to linger here, searching for his head. According to legend, he lost his noggin long ago in a nearby shipwreck

 

Bowdoin

 

North Bowdoin Cemetary - Cemetary in the Pit - Rumored to have been buried here in the 1800s is a woman who practiced witchcraft. Some say she was buried near a big stump, and if a star appears in the stump, it means the witch is roaming the grounds with you.

 

Bristol 

 

Fort William Henry - Colonial Pemaquid A ghost is said to live at this popular historic tourist attraction. In 1696, Native American Chief Taukolexis was said to be hanged here at the fort. Locals say that his ghost now resides in the tree from which he was hanged

 

Brunswick

 

Five Stones of River Road - The 5 mysterious stones have no known purpose, but those who live nearby say that on moonlit nights, singing voices can be heard around them. Some say they are the voices of long-gone Native Americans who lived here long ago.

 

Joshua L Chamberlain Museum - The museum is named for a former owner, Civil War general, Bowdoin College president, and Maine Governor Joshua L. Chamberlain. Built around 1924, the Greek Revival home is still home to Chamberlain and his wife Fanny, some say. Their apparitions have been seen in the house many times.

 

Pickard Theatre - Bowdoin College - At the Pickard Theater at Bowdoin College, a technician reported seeing a lamp swinging although there was no ventilation in the room, and feeling extremely cold.

 

Bucksport

 

Bucksport Cemetary - the grave of Jonathan Buck has a footprint cracked into the tombstone.  The tombstone has been replaced many times but the foot always reappears a short time later.  Jonathan Buck ordered the death of his mistress, claiming she was a witch.  She promised to return and dance on his grave.  It is believed to be her foot ( and leg ) that continues to appear on the tombstone.

 

Cape Elizabeth

 

The 1871 castle is said to be haunted by 1800s publisher and poet Sylvester Beckett. Reports say he appears as a ball of blue light, causes cold spots, and jerks blankets off freshly made beds. This is a private residence, and no trespassing is allowed

 

Caribou 

 

Sudden drafts of cold air when windows are shut, slight moans of a 15 year old boy who was killed in a knifing fight in the parking lot of a convenience store across the street from the school.  The young man tried to get back to school to seek help but died near the flag stone from the chest wound he sustained from the fight.

 

Cumberland

 

According to legend back in the 1950's 5 young high school boys were murdered mysteriously at the school.  No one knows who did it, and obviously no one was caught.  Ever since, late at night when you're walking the track behind the school you'll see glimpses of lights going on and off and hear strange noises if your near the Greely High School, and you feel as though you are being watched.  There are 2 graveyards which also have reported hauntings.

 

Dudley

 

Old Dudley Oxford Road has had many reporting of a man riding down the street on his horse dressed in an old colonial black alphet (fancy name for outfit).  No one has ever gotten close enough to make out the man, but many have reported.

 

East Andover

 

Ellis Pond - aka Roxbury Pond has had reports of ghostly presences disturbing visitors. People have reported walking along the shores of the pond and hearing or feeling the presence of someone following them, even though they were alone.

Eliot

 

William Fog Library - The historic library, established in 1907, has been home to some strange activity. Folks say a photograph taken for a newspaper revealed a transparent skull floating above a staircase. Also reported have been windows that broke by themselves.

 

Farmington 

 

Mallett Hall - Haunts at Mallet Hall include a little girl known to some as Mary and a dorm mother who is said to have hanged herself. Also, the basement and the 3rd floor are both said to be home to particularly dark forces.

 

UME at Farmington - Auditorium - The university's auditorium is haunted by Lilian Nordica, a famed opera singer; the auditorium was dedicated to the school in her name. Folks say she can be heard singing from the stage.

 

Freeport

 

Casco Bay YMCA is believed to be built on an Indian burial ground, but no one knows for sure.  Sometimes the janitors on the night shift see a small female figure walking around the pool.  No one has any idea who she is or what she might want.

 

Fryeburg

 

A 7- or 8-year-old girl's ghost is said to haunt the Admiral Peary House. The apparition is called Annabelle, because a visiting psychic claimed this was the child's name.

 

Harpswell

 

Harpswell Harbor - A famous phantom ship was said to appear just before dark. It was depicted in the John Greenleaf Whittier's 1866 poem "The Dead Ship of Harpswell." The ship changed size and shape, but always appeared sailing straight ahead at full sail, no matter what the weather was like. 

 

Houlton

 

Paddy Holler - Foxcroft Cemetary - stories passed down over the years say that some of the older folks hooked on canned heat died in this small town after drinking poisonous canned heat, also on Hemore Rd there is an old green house that sits kitty cornered and has been abandoned since 66, when a young woman with 9 children passed away from a misdiagnosed brain aneurysm.

 

Kennebunk actually has several different places with visitors...

 

Captain Fairfield Inn - Reported to be haunted by the ghost of Captain James Fairfield. The ghost is said to appear and disappear at various times and places throughout the house, but does not do anything to scare or frighten the guests.

 

Captain Lord Mansion ( Now a Luxury B&B ) - A female apparition is often seen walking through the Lincoln bedroom. She also occasionally appears on the hallway outside the rooms.

 

Jane Morgan Home - this home used to owned by Jane Morgan who was an actress.  It is said that the lights flicker when no one is home and in the dead of winter when the owners are away, you can see footprints all around the house in the snow.

 

Kennebunk Inn - Allegedly haunted by two ghosts, one thought to be the former owner and one a clerk who worked there decades ago. Haunted activity include glasses falling off shelves, other items moving, and strange noises that some claim sound like voices.

 

Tides Too Sea Suites -Formerly Tides Inn By The Sea, the Tides Too Sea Suites is haunted by original owner Emma Foss. She is said to actively participate in the running of her beloved 1899 inn. 

 

Wallingford Hall - Employees at this historic site say that if you come for a visit, you may see apparitions of soldiers in the barn, hear doors slamming and footsteps running on the old staircase, and feel unexplained cold spots.

 

Kittery

 

Appledore Island - Golden Girl Point - A female form, with blonde waist-length hair, appears on the beach. She is said to be the mistress of the famed pirate Blackbeard. Those who live nearby have seen her standing alone, looking out to sea; some have even heard her cry out "He will come again."

 

Lancaster

 

Blood Town Forest got its name from the 1970's when kids used to camping out in the forest.  One night a couple went out there, and while the girl was setting up the tent, the guy went back to the car to get something, and when he got to the car, the girl's head was resting on the hood of the car.  So he ran to a nearby farmer's house and called the police, and when the police got there, the guy's body was lying next to it.  You can hear all kinds of messed up things if you go out there, but be careful if you do because farmers that live nearby try to chase kids away from going in the forest.  There is a big rock at the entrance that tells the entire story.  

 

Lebanon

 

Old Cottage was once a school house.  Late at night between 12-1, you can hear children screaming and running in and out of the rooms.  When these children run in the moonlight they become visible to the human eye.

 

Lewiston

 

Hotel Crypt - Welcome to The Hotel Crypt, the only attraction of its kind in America -- possibly the world. In 1907, Father Wallace, the first priest of St. Patrick's Church in Lewiston, Maine, was laid to rest in a crypt below the church's mortuary chapel.

 

Lucerne

 

Lucerne Inn there has been reports of shadows on the walls, footsteps, a woman and a child talking outside of the door when there is no one there, feels like some one is always watching over you.

 

Manchester

 

The Devil's Footprint - Embedded in a stone in the wall around a cemetery near the North Manchester Meeting House, the Devil's Footprint is a mark of great curiosity. Stories say that when the road was being built, the construction workers came across a rock that couldn't be moved

 

Millinocket

 

Brownville Road - The White Lady can often be seen walking alongside the road and the green bridge.  In the 1940's a young couple was travelling into town, coming back from their honeymoon.  The car went off the side of the road and into a ditch, the man told his wife to stay by the car while he sought help.  When he came back, his wife was nowhere to be found, and now it is believed that her ghost haunts the road.  Certain places will have thick fog, and several townies have had spooky encounters with this young lady, the car is still in the ditch, on its roof, untouched.

 

 

Newfield

 

Old Straw House is haunted by Hannah Straw who is buried under the kitchen floor.

 

Ogunquit

 

Ogunquit Playhouse - A theater production may not be the only thing of interest to see here. It is said that those who visit the playhouse may see the ghosts of Revolutionary War soldiers.

 

Orono

 

University of Maine - Beta Theta Pi House - the downstairs "advisors suite" at the Beta Pi House on the campus is said to be occupied by an old disgruntled brother of the fraternity.  The 3rd floor (attic) has a separate room reserved for housemothers over the years, and believed to haunted by one of its last residents, Evelyn.  She opens the door after it has been locked and bolted.  She can be heard walking around in the attic, and along the back stairwell to the kitchen.  She flicks lights off and on in the guest bathroom.

 

Parsonsfield

 

Parsonsfield Semenary - Sounds are heard in both buildings. The dorm is 46 rooms. Doors are open and closed, footsteps, talking, and children are heard day or night. 3 rd floor you can feel touching and they will play with long hair.

 

Phippsburg

 

Sequin Island Lighthouse - Local legend tells of a former keeper who ordered a piano for his bored young wife. It came with one song on sheet music, which she played over and over until her husband, driven insane by the repetition, chopped the piano to bits with an axe and then killed his wife. 

 

Poland

 

Poland Spring Resort - Reportedly haunted by the original owner, people claim they have seen his apparition walking the hallways, that they hear his footsteps and that he moves objects in the Inn.

 

Route 26  HitchhikerThe glowing ghost of Route 26 is a hitchhiker, a young lady in a fancy dress. Some tales tell that she was a bride who was killed in a fatal accident in the 1930s; others say she was a teen on her way to the prom.

 

Portland

 

Charles Q Clapp House

 

Captain Asa Clapp is said to haunt this house, as well as the nearby McLellan-Sweat Mansion. His apparition has been seen, and other phenomena such as cold spots, footsteps, and an eerie presence have been experienced.

Time and Temperature Building

 

Allegedly haunted by a female ghost who has a preference for riding the elevators and who will apparently often use them, sending them independently to different floors. Some workers in the building have claimed to have seen an unknown female walking through their office 

 

University of Southern Maine

 

Many reports of cold spots, footsteps, and objects being moved around, and more frequently in certain rooms than others.  The most common things are stereos and t.v.'s being turned on and off, clocks being reset right before the student's eyes, and general harmless pranks like these.

 

The Robie Andrew Dorm at USM - local documentation indicates that on the 4th floor of this building there was a suicide or murder in the early part of the 20th century (1900's) when it was still an all women's learning center.  Students have seen many times a ghost and have experienced gold spots, mild poltergeist activity, they constantly hear footsteps, and someone moving around above them when there is no one there.  One student reported that the ghost tried to grab her arm and her room was always cold.  According to legend there are 5 spirits who live in the house, and another was rumored to have committed suicide because she was pregnant and her boyfriend left her once she announced that she was.

 

Randolph

 

Randolph Forest - Old Narrow Gauge Trail - From the forest, witnesses have reported voices calling out to them, or screaming at them, and have seen orbs, flashes, and dark shadows. They have heard footsteps and felt a feeling of dread. Some say there is a spirit named Bicycle Eddie who may be trying to impart a message 

 

 

Readfield

 

Readfield Historical Society and Museum - This building is haunted by a young schoolgirl and a hostile presence, believed to be a male. Whispering noises, moans and screams have been heard in the building, along with disembodied footsteps. A visitor was attacked by an unseen entity. Electrical appliances go on and off

 

Rockland

 

1898 Berry Manor Inn - may have 3 Victorian era lady ghosts who stay there as well.

 

Captain Lindsey House Inn - has a ghost or two that slams doors.  

 

LimeRock Inn - was originally a home to a doctor and supposedly his dead patients can be seen in the stairwell and parlor

 

Rockport

Skowhegan

 

Strand Cinema - This movie house was built in 1929, and became Strand Cinema in 2003. Some say it is home to a ghost who is very angry. The phenomena surrounding the place are said to have begun in 1978 when an apartment was added to the building.

 

West Side Lake George - Unexplained activity abounds near the camp's cabins. When a group of children came across one old cabin in the woods, each one looked through the windows and saw something different. In one instant there appeared to be a game room inside, with folded chairs around the room

 

Standish

 

The Old Red Church

 

This church was built in the late 18th century, and has been the source of many hauntings. Mysterious voices and the sound of something being dragged across the roof of the church are some of the many paranormal occurrences that have taken place here. (Submitted by Callum Swift)

 

St Joseph's College Chapel

 

The young ghost in residence here was the son of a family who once owned this land. The son was buried at the chapel. Witnesses have reported hearing him playing and laughing. Another child's spirit haunts the pond. 

 

Union

 

D R Gaul Middle School - many pictures taken not all at once, but mysterious orbs showed up in many.  ghost reportedly named "sid" and old janitor at the school.

 

Warren

 

Maine State Prison - correction officers have seen spirits of inmates in the industries building.  Mot of the equipment came from the old prison in Thomaston, which had a lot of spirits.  A lot of ghost stories have been reported there before it was torn down.  People feel very uneasy in the industries building at night, they feel a strong presence.

 

Waterville 

 

Mount Saint Joseph - Mount Saint Jospeh is a nursing home that used to be a children's hospital. The site appears to be haunted by children's spirits. Different residents in the nursing home, having never met before, have reported a little girl in a purple dress who keeps them awake all night.

 

Wilton

 

Wilton Farm and Home Museum - People have reported being touched and brushed against by people they can't see. Yelling voices and musical instruments being played have also been reported in the museum

 

Windham

 

Anderson Cemetary - Visitors to the cemetery, located on River Road, have returned to their parked cars to find tricks have been played on them. Some find that their vehicles have moved 5 or 6 feet forward or backward; others find their car doors standing wide open.

 

Chute Road Cemetary - According to old tales, two young sisters went missing nearby. The belief it that they may have fallen into a defunct well or mine shaft. Although their bodies were never found, they each have a tombstone in the cemetery. Folks have spotted the two ghost girls playing

 

Wiscasset

 

Canfield's Restaurant - Built in the 1790s to be a boardinghouse, the building that now houses Canfield's Restaurant is said to be haunted by a poltergeist. Witnesses say teapots are turned topsy-turvy, chairs move around, and the some witnesses are smacked in the behind. Believed to be Lydia Dana, a previous owner

 

Musical Wonder House Museum - Original a two-family home built in 1852, this museum is said to be haunted by a young man in his early 20s. His apparition has been seen around the museum, and it is believed that he was a former resident of the house long ago.

 

York

 

Old York Cemetary - Old Parish Cemetary - This cemetery contains the grave of Mary Nasson, said to be a witch who was executed and buried there in 1774. A heavy stone slab lies over the grave, rumored to be placed there in order to keep her inside. The stone slab is said to always be warm. 

 

Museums of Old York - The friendly white lady who haunts this museum is said to be the spirit of a woman who long ago was hung here for witchcraft, when the building used to be the town hall. Some call her the "White Witch."
