Hiking

Moxie Bald Mountain - part of the Appalachian Trail - round trip up and down the mountain about 4 hours.

Directions:  From the junction of Route 15 and Route 16 in Abbot, take Route 16 west toward Bingham for 19.4 miles. Just past a Recreational Trail Crossing sign and the Moscow town line, turn right onto Town Line Road. Drive 2.6 miles to the end of the road and turn right onto Deadwater Road. Drive 4 miles to a fork in the road and take the left fork onto Trestle Road, staying along the power lines. Drive 2.9 miles and turn right onto an unmarked road (which is just past an unmarked road on the left that has a bridge over Moxie Stream). Drive uphill on the unmarked road 0.7 mile to a fork in the road, and take the left fork onto the unmarked Moxie Bald Road. Drive 3 miles to a bridge over Bald Mountain Brook. Cross the bridge and park on the right, well out of the way of traffic. Walk about 0.1 mile farther to where the Appalachian Trail crosses the road. Take a right to hike the trail northbound to Moxie Bald Mountain.

Maine's most famous State Park with over 2 million visitors per year.   The normal price for the day is $20.00 for up to a 15 passenger car vehicle.  All park visitors during the months of May through October are required to pay a fee.  Only small portions of the Loop Road are open during the winter months, narrowed to one lane, the other lane reserved for snowmobiles.

Loop Road during normal seasonal hours, is the main drive located in Acadia National Park, and  offers a scenic tour of the park and passes Sand Beach, Great Head, a gorge called Thunder Hole, as well as forests and cliffs.

Fun Fact......Did You Know?  The historic carriage road system at Acadia National Park features 17 stone-faced bridges spanning streams, waterfalls, cliffs, and roads. The design of each bridge, such as Cobblestone Bridge, is unique.
