Bristol

Colonial Pemaquid / Fort William Henry

This was actually the first settlement in America,  in 1607  the English discovered and stayed for a year. The settlement was deamed unsuccessful and therefore never credited with the discovery.  In order to go home they had to build a boat and sail back!

The home of the first ship built in America!

In 1631, two merchants by the name of Bristol became patent-holding proprietors of Pemaquid.   This site was destroyed in 1676, 1689 & 1696.  The town eventually named after them.

The site of the first stone fort, after 2 otherr burn downs, to only be demolished less than 4 years later by the French and the Wabanakis combined efforts.  The site was abandoned for 150 years.

The Village consists of: Fort William Henry, Fort House, Burial Ground, Museum, Angel Gabriel plaque ( galleon destroyed by hurricane in 1635), and a gift shop.

Ghosts @ Fort William Henry - Colonial Pemaquid A ghost is said to lives on the grounds.
