Mid June people come to see the formal garden next to the Maine Audubon Society's Headquarters.  A spectaclular see of peonies, once owned by David Moulton, a Portland lawyer at the turn of the 20th century and owner of000 the Gilsland Farm before donating to the Society.  He had over 200 Chinese peony cultivars on 7 acres.  He gave for 2 decades red peonies to the high school grads for their gowns.  The peonies left are remants have gone wild.  Blossoms range in color from pale pink, bright red, deep burgandies, peppermint swirls, soft whites and lemon yellows.  The air is aromatic!

Fort Kent

Fish River Falls & Black Lake

The Fish River Falls Trail is located south of Fort Kent. Its trailhead is at the end of the Airport Road where there is a small parking lot.  The Airport Road is off Strip Road which can be accessed from Caribou Road (Route 161)

The Fish River Falls Trail is a short woods trail leading from the grass airstrip at the end of the Airport Road down to the Fish River Falls on the Fish River, a class IV rapid. Once the Falls is reached, a small network of trails connects the portage routes around the Falls with the access trail. There is also a large campsite with a picnic table next to the Falls. The trails next to the River offer great view of the River and the Falls. Hikers can also stand on the rocks in the River next to the Falls to enjoy the scenery. However, attention must be paid because of the slippery surface of the rocks and the turbulent water of the Falls.

Black Lake is approximately six miles from the town of Fort Kent and is reached by the South Perley Brook Road. A concrete boat ramp, parking area and picnic area are located on the south shore near the outlet.

Ghost Sightings at Casco Bay YMCA is believed to be built on an Indian burial ground, but no one knows for sure.  Sometimes the janitors on the night shift see a small female figure walking around the pool.  No one has any idea who she is or what she might want.

Natural Phenomenon

William Tuttle Farm ...1797

In 1797 the Tuttle family moved to the 300 acre farm that once covered the Desert of Maine where they successfully raised crops of potatoes and hay for several years. Failure to rotate crops thereafter, combined with massive land - clearing and overgrazing resulted in severe soil erosion that exposed this hidden Desert. As the spreading sand grew uncontrollable, the Tuttles surrendered, leaving the Desert to it's destiny.

Visit the Farm Museum in the original Tuttle Barn. The barn is over 200 years old and is the only building remaining from the Tuttle farm.

Historic Downtown

This 2 block district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1980.  Most of the commercial buildings were built in the 1800's, when the town's lumber, paper and ice industries were hopping!  The ice industry alone added $2,000,000 in revenue to the local economy.
