Maine blueberries have been appreciated for many, many years.  The Native Americans would dry them for the winter months.  They were discovered to have healing powers that remedied morning sickness, headaches and coughs.

The first time blueberries were commercially harvested was during the Civil War, and the berries were sent to the Union soldiers.

Since that time we have discovered that blueberries are high in antioxidants, they lower cholesterol, lower the risk of getting hypertension, improved memory, and they help fight against colon cancer according to Margaret Nearing, author of 5 Health Benefits of Blueberries.  Maine produces over 90% of the wild blueberry crops in the United States, or greater than 30 million pounds.

Wild blueberries are smaller than the cultivated kind.  They tend to have a more intense flavor than the cultivated ones.  They are also a lowbush and the cultivated ones are a highbush, these are hybrids and are grown successfully throughout the United States and other areas of the World as well.

The wild blueberry bush has a 2 year cycle, they produce berries one year, take a break next year, which allows the plant to rejuvenate itself.

August is harvest season, and it is no easy task.  A special rake was designed by a Maine farmer by the name of Abijah Tabbutt over a 100 years ago.  This rake has undergone some minor variations but it is essentially the same hand tool as when first designed.  Some wild blueberry farms provide these to their patrons.

Blueberries are also a favorite of the Black Bear, and they will come back to the same field each year for harvesting.  My dog loves blueberries!  I rescued Fiddles, and when I took her with me blueberry picking, she would wander, and I would reel her in, and she'd come back and look at me, as if to say "where is my treat?",  and then she would smell the blueberries and start munching, she ate quite a few, and now she begs when they come out of the freezer.
